Must Go On? Turning Daily Grief into Good Grief explores the grief we carry in public, the grief we hold in private, and the courage it takes to keep becoming.
Across three acts, Terrell will share selections from his album Must Go On: A Rite of Passage, offer the stories behind the work, and create space for an intergenerational conversation about identity, memory, loss, and healing.
Must Go On: A Rite of Passage has been submitted for Grammy consideration for Best Spoken Word Album.
THE EXPERIENCE
ACT I: MEET THE ARTIST
The afternoon opens with a live performance, followed by an introduction to Terrell and the story behind Must Go On: A Rite of Passage.
ACT II: DEFINING YOUR GRIEF
What makes grief personal? What makes it public? What happens when millions of people grieve the same person or event?
This conversation will explore the differences between private and collective grief. We will consider public losses and shared experiences across generations, including the Challenger disaster, the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy, 9/11, COVID-19, and the deaths of beloved public figures.
We will also ask what kind of emotional ownership we feel when a celebrity dies, even when we never personally knew them, and how that grief compares with losing someone closest to us.
ACT III: MUST GO ON
The afternoon concludes with a final live performance.
THINGS TO KNOW
This is a reflective, community-centered listening party. Conversations about death, personal loss, public tragedy, addiction, family, identity, and grief. Guests will be invited into the conversation, but sharing is always optional; encouraged to care for themselves and step away if needed. This event takes place on National Coming Out Day and centers the work of an LGBTQ+ artist, but guests of all identities are welcome.
Please arrive with enough time to check in and settle into the space. The program begins promptly at 4:00 PM.
